Penelope Cruz Sanchez is the daughter of Eduardo Cruz, a Madrid hairdresser, and Encarna Sanchez. She was a compulsive performer as a child and would reenact TV commercials to keep the family entertained. But she chose to devote her time to dance. After nine years of ballet training at Spain's National Conservatory she was able to continue her training under the tutelage of a number of famous dancers. She realized her passion at the age of 15 when she topped 300 girls at an audition for an agency that represented talent. She was then offered roles in Spanish music videos and TV.
